A 20-inch hackberry at the back fence takes the same twenty minutes of grinding as one at the curb and an extra forty of walking a machine there and shavings back.
What brings the call is rarely appearance out here. It is a bush hog or a mower deck that has already found the stump once, a section of fence a contractor cannot set posts through, or a buyer's inspector who wrote up a rotted trunk sitting eight feet from the septic tank lid.

Cedar, hackberry and hedge apple stumps, not landscaping

Cedar is the one people misjudge. Septic first, machine second
Nothing out this way is on city sewer. Every one of these lots runs a tank and a drainfield, and the field is not on any map a locate service will hand you. A loaded grinder crossing lateral lines in a wet March is how a $200 stump becomes a $6,000 repair.
So we ask two things before scheduling. Where is the tank lid, and do you have the health department permit drawing from when the system went in. If the drawing is gone, the lid and the cleanouts give us enough to keep the wheels off the field, and we come in the long way around rather than straight across the lawn. On anything soft we walk the machine in rather than driving it and accept the extra time in the quote.

Does it cost more because the stump is way out back?
Yes, but by time rather than by a surcharge. Walking a machine 200 feet each way, then moving shavings the same distance, adds most of an hour to a job the grinding itself takes twenty minutes to do. On a single distant stump that usually means one price band up. On four stumps in the same back corner it barely registers, because the walk happens once.
Can you get a machine through the gate between the yard and the field?

Do you need water or power from the house?
No. The machine carries its own fuel and we bring our own hand tools. What helps is a place to park a truck and trailer that is not the septic field, and a gate or a route we can use without taking a panel off. On the big lots out here that is almost never a problem.
