Before you call, know these three numbers
Diameter at the cut, measured across the widest part of the face with a tape. Gate width at the narrowest pinch along the route, which is often not the gate itself. And the count, because two stumps priced together cost noticeably less per stump than two priced apart.
With those three, a price over the phone stops being a guess. Without them, every honest company will give you a range, and a range is not much use when you are comparing quotes. The other detail worth having ready is what is going back over the spot afterwards, since grass, a flower bed and a patio each want a different depth and it is cheaper to grind once to the right depth than to come back.
The two questions specific to this town

What does stump grinding cost in White House?

How deep do you grind?

Not for ordinary residential stump grinding. Permit thresholds here are aimed at land disturbance and construction rather than at a single trunk, and White House has no standalone tree ordinance and no tree board. What about stumps in a city park or on the greenway?
That is not a homeowner call to make. My stump is over the septic field. Can it still be ground?
Usually, with the tank lid and the field lines flagged before we arrive. Laterals commonly sit shallow enough that a machine crossing them repeatedly is the risk, more than the grinding itself. On a big lot we will route around the field entirely, even where that adds fifty yards of pushing a machine by hand. A cracked lateral is a several-thousand-dollar afternoon.
Why did one company quote by the inch and another by the job?
Per-inch pricing is common and it works fine on simple, open, single-stump work. It falls apart on access: an 18-inch stump behind a 34-inch gate at the bottom of a slope is not the same job as an 18-inch stump beside a driveway, and an inch-based number cannot see that. We price the whole job so the awkward ones are priced honestly rather than discovered on the day.
Can you grind in winter?
Yes, and it is often the best time here. Frozen or firm ground carries a machine without rutting, the grass is dormant so surface scuffing recovers by spring, and the calendar is quieter so bookings are faster. What stops us is not cold, it is saturation. A February week after three days of rain is worse for your lawn than any July afternoon.
How much notice do you need?
Ordinary work is booked three to five working days ahead. Storm damage, anything leaning over a house, a car or a footway, gets same or next day. Quotes themselves are much faster: photos sent on a weekday almost always come back priced within a few hours, and that costs you nothing and holds your place.
Do you grind surface roots as well as the stump?
Yes, and on the older Northwoods and Highland Drive silver maples that is frequently the bigger part of the work. We follow the heavy laterals out from the flare and take them below grade so a mower will pass over them. Roots running under a slab, a footing or a sidewalk panel are a judgement call, and we will tell you where we intend to stop and why.
