Nearly Everybody Undercounts Their Stumps

When somebody rings about three or four stumps, the number on site is usually six. That is not carelessness. A stump you have walked past for eight years stops registering as a stump.

The missed ones follow a pattern. Anything inside a planting bed, because mulch and liriope hide a ten-inch face completely. Anything behind an outbuilding. And the multi-stem shrubs that were technically trees: a river birch clump is three trunks off one root mass, a crape myrtle can be five or seven. Whether that counts as one stump or several depends on how the stems separate below the soil, which changes the price, so it is worth photographing from directly above rather than describing.

Walk the boundary with a tape and count what is actually there before you call. An accurate list is the single easiest way to turn a provisional quote into a firm one.

Why White House Stumps Come in Clusters

White House stumps arrive in groups for a plain reason: a whole street was planted in the same season, by the same crew, out of the same nursery order.

Colorado blue spruce is the clearest case. It went into hundreds of yards in the late eighties and nineties because it photographed well in a catalogue, and it is a Rocky Mountain tree being asked to survive Middle Tennessee humidity. Needle cast works up from the bottom, the tree thins out from the inside, and somewhere around twenty-five to thirty years it is a grey spike. Those were planted in twos and threes, and they die in twos and threes.

The Ladder: What Each Extra Stump Costs

Pricing multiples is arithmetic rather than negotiation. There is a minimum service call that covers getting a truck, a trailer and a machine to your address at all, and the first stump absorbs most of it. Every stump after that is priced on machine time and wood volume alone, so the per-stump figure drops steeply across the first few and then levels off.

In practice, four mid-size stumps in one yard tends to land near two and a half times the price of a single one, not four times. Eight small ones, a run of shrub stumps or a failed hedge line, can work out per stump at under half the single-stump rate.

Two things break the ladder. Stumps at separate addresses, because each one is a fresh setup even on the same street. And stumps needing different machines, where a forty-inch maple out front and a stump reachable only through a walk gate are effectively two jobs sharing a driveway.

What Genuinely Fits in One Visit

Machine hours are the constraint. A realistic working day is six to seven hours of actual grinding once the drive, the locate check, setup and cleanup at both ends are taken out. That is somewhere around eight to twelve small and mid-size subdivision stumps in open access, or two large maples, or one large maple and four smaller ones.

Spoil is the other limit. Eight stumps produce an awkward quantity of material, and where it ends up needs agreeing at quote stage rather than discovering at four o'clock with a full yard and a fading light.

Where the list runs past a day we split it by geography inside the property rather than by size, so the machine is not crossing the same lawn twice. And each area gets finished and tidied before we move on, so if weather stops us early the part that is done is genuinely done rather than half open.

Before You Call About a Group of Stumps

• Count them twice, and look inside the beds the second time
• Photograph any multi-stem clump from directly above, where the stems part
• Measure the two largest across the soil line and estimate the rest
• Note which ones can be reached from the same side of the house
• Decide whether the material stays on site before you ask for a number
• Say if any of them sit on a neighbour's side of the line
