Between 5:00 and 5:10 that afternoon the National Weather Service documented 70 mph straight-line winds moving through the White House area of Sumner County, snapping and uprooting trees and tearing up a barn on Fern Valley Road. Earlier the same day, at 2:43 PM, an EF-1 touched down at Cedar Hill in Robertson County and cut a 2.31-mile path about 200 yards wide, taking down dozens of trees. Empson Road went under water between Covington Road and Cross Plains Road and closed.
That combination — wind first, then flooding — is what makes storm stump work here different from a dry-weather grind. Trees came down on ground already saturated, which is exactly why so many of them tipped out whole rather than snapping at the trunk. Saturated Highland Rim silt has no holding power, and a shallow-plated maple or Leyland cypress simply lets go.

Snapped Versus Uprooted Are Two Different Bills
A tree that snapped in the wind leaves a standing stump with its root system intact and level. That is a normal grind, priced normally, and it is the easy outcome.
A tree that tipped out is another matter. You get a root plate standing on edge — a slab of soil, chert and root that can be six or eight feet across — plus a crater where it pulled free, plus the fact that the whole mass is usually leaning against something. The plate has to be cut down, ground apart, and the material worked back into the hole, then the hole filled and tamped so the ground does not keep dropping for the next three years. It is more machine time and more soil handling than the standing stump next door, and the quote reflects that.
We price the two separately even on the same property, because otherwise the numbers make no sense to anybody reading them.
Why Waiting a Week Before Grinding Is Usually Smart
Immediately after a storm, the priority order is: anything on a structure, anything on a wire, anything blocking a drive. Those are tree-crew and utility calls, not grinding calls. Cumberland Electric handles the lines; nobody should be near a leaning tree with a conductor in it.
Stump grinding comes after the wood is cut and hauled, and there is a practical reason not to rush it. Ground that just took four inches of rain will rut under a machine, and a grinder track across soaked silt leaves ruts you will be repairing longer than the stump ever bothered you. On lots that drain toward Covington Road and the low crossings, we routinely wait for a dry window rather than mat the whole yard.
If you are dealing with insurance, take photographs of the stump and the plate before anybody touches them, and get the grinding quote in writing separately from the tree removal quote. Adjusters treat them as different line items.
What We Fold Into a Storm Job
Storm work is rarely one clean stump. There is usually a scatter of secondary damage — a hung limb that finally dropped, a Leyland cypress that survived but is leaning at fifteen degrees, small snapped stubs along a fence line that the tree crew left because they were not the emergency.
We grind the stumps, take down the plate, break up and grind the small stuff in place where it makes sense, and clear the debris we generated. We also grade and rake the disturbed ground rather than handing you a moonscape and calling it finished. Where a crater is deep, we bring in fill; where the chip volume is high, we haul.
What we will not do is quote a whole storm-damaged property sight unseen from a phone description. Wind damage never distributes the way people describe it, and every one of these we have walked has had something on it that the phone call missed.

How fast can you get out after a big wind event?
For an actual hazard — a stump or plate blocking access, or a plate holding a leaning trunk — we move on it within a day or two. Routine post-storm grinding queues behind that, and after a widespread event that queue can run a couple of weeks. We will tell you the real position on the list rather than a comfortable one.
Will homeowners insurance cover stump grinding?
It depends on the policy and on what the tree hit. Coverage is far more likely when the tree damaged a covered structure, and far less likely when it simply fell in the yard. Some policies cap debris removal at a fixed dollar amount that the tree work alone uses up. Ask your adjuster specifically whether stump removal is included, and get the answer in writing.
The tree company already came. Why is the stump still this tall?
Tree crews cut for their own safety and loading efficiency, not for the grinder. A stump left 18 or 24 inches tall is normal from a felling operation. It costs a bit more to grind because we are removing that above-grade wood before we ever get to grade, but it is not a problem — just mention the height when you call so the quote is accurate.
Can you grind while the ground is still soft?
We can, but often should not. Silt soils here hold water above the fragipan for days, and a machine crossing that leaves ruts and compaction that outlast the stump problem. On a small stump reachable from a driveway it does not matter. On a back-yard job we would rather wait for the ground to firm up than hand you a rutted lawn.
Do you take the trunk and limbs too, or only the stump?
Our end of it is the stump, the root plate and the debris the grinding itself produces. If a tree crew has already cut and stacked wood, we can usually work around it or move it to grind, but hauling a full tree's worth of trunk sections is a different truck and a different job. We will point you toward who does that if you have not lined it up.
