Why we quote from photographs

A site visit for a single stump costs somebody an hour of driving, and that hour ends up inside the price whether or not anyone says so. Photographs remove it. They also produce a better quote, because a picture with a tape across the cut face is more accurate than a homeowner's estimate of diameter, and homeowners undershoot diameter almost every time.

What comes back is one figure. It states the grind depth in inches below grade, whether the chips are being left, raked or hauled, and roughly how long we will be on site. It stands as long as the ground matches the frames you sent. Where it does not, the machine stops and the phone comes out before another inch is cut, rather than a surprise turning up on the invoice.

What a photo cannot tell us

Three things, and they are worth volunteering. First, buried private services: irrigation runs, invisible fence, low-voltage lighting, a septic tank and field. None of them show in a picture and none of them get marked by a locate service, because 811 covers public utilities only.

Second, how the ground behaves. A yard that looks fine in a July photograph may be the same yard that holds water above the fragipan every March. If your lawn is one of the soft ones, say so. Third, history. A stump that was cut fifteen years ago and has been mowed over since, a trunk that grew up in an old fence line and may be carrying wire, or a spot where a shed or a slab used to sit. Any of those changes the plan, and all of them are cheaper to hear about now.

Estimates for more than one stump

The per-stump number falls as the count rises, and the fall is steeper than most people expect, because you are paying once for the trailer trip, the setup and the walk-in rather than once per trunk. A row of six Leyland cypress along a fence line is a completely different calculation from six separate visits.

For multiples, one photograph looking down the whole row is more useful than six close-ups. Add a single close shot of the largest stump in the run with a tape on it, and a note of how many there are. The same applies to a whole street: if three neighbours on Christian Drive or Bedrock Drive want stumps out in the same week, quote them together and everyone pays less.

Send these four photos

  • Overhead shot of the exposed face with a tape stretched over its broadest point
  • Ten to twelve feet back, showing beds, slopes, fences, driveway and anything breakable nearby
  • The route from where a truck and trailer can park to where the stump sits
  • The gate with a tape across the opening, if the work is behind a fence
  • For multiples, one frame looking down the whole row plus a close shot of the biggest one
  • Your street name, the town, and what is going back over the spot afterwards

Your stump grinding questions, White House edition

Is the estimate really free, and is it binding?

Free, and binding on us as long as the site matches the photographs. That is the trade: you take four decent pictures, we hold the number. If a stump turns out to be twenty-eight inches when the photo suggested eighteen, or there is a slab six inches down that nobody knew about, we stop and call you with the revised figure before any more cutting happens.

How quickly will I hear back?

On a weekday, usually within a few hours, and by the end of the same day in almost all cases. Weekend photos get answered Monday morning unless it is storm damage, which gets answered whenever it lands. Getting a quote does not commit you to anything and it does not put you on any list.

Do you price by the inch?

No, we price the job. Inch-based pricing works on a flat open lot and misleads badly everywhere else, because access, slope, gate width, buried services and spoil handling can easily matter more than diameter. Quoting the whole job means the awkward ones are priced honestly at the start rather than renegotiated when the machine cannot get in.

Will you match another company's quote?

We will tell you honestly whether theirs looks right. A number well below ours usually means a shallower grind, chips left where they fall, or a machine that will not fit and has not been asked to. Get the depth in inches and the chip plan in writing from both of us and the comparison usually answers itself without anyone needing to haggle.
